Four readers tell us why they’re proud to say #IAmAnEngineer

The world of engineering is varied, dynamic, and sometimes beautiful. As part of Engineers Australia’s exciting brand campaign showcasing engineering to inspire a new generation, and in celebration of our amazing discipline, we asked engineers around the world to tell us why they are proud to say #IAmAnEngineer.

The response was overwhelming. We received many stories from engineers working around the world, sharing the work they do, the projects they’ve realised, and the origins of their engineering passion.

Nyssa MacManus

Originally from Missouri, Mechanical Maintenance Engineer Nyssa MacManus’s career has taken her from the oilfields of Louisiana to the Pilbara, Western Australia, via North Queensland.

"I have always loved being hands-on and thrive on leading from the front line. My passions are in maintenance execution, knowledge sharing and continuous improvement."
Nyssa MacManus

Ausaaf Ahmad

Ausaaf Ahmad shared how he would dismantle his toys as a child, and try to use the components to build something better. Fast forward, and Ausaaf is now working as a Work Health and Safety Consultant across a range of industries.

"I AM PROUD TO SAY THAT #IAmAnEngineer AND AM STILL STRIVING TO CONTINUE MY EFFORTS IN IMPROVING THE WORLD WE LIVE IN AND MAKING IT SAFER SO THAT EVERY HUMAN LIFE CAN BE VALUED."
Ausaaf Ahmad

Ella Hingston

Senior Asset Management Engineer Ella Hingston started her civil engineering degree about 12 years ago. In the beginning, Ella assumed she’d be working on bridges, or testing concrete. Since then, though, her career has evolved, and she now works in infrastructure asset management.

"I came to realise that at the heart of engineering is problem solving, and what better way is there to describe "civil" engineering than the provision of solutions to communities?"
Ella Hingston

Ashley Flower

Ashley Flower TMIEAust was the winner of the Engineering Technologist of the Year award in 2021. He advises anyone embarking on an engineering technologist career to “give everything a go”.

"I’m proud of being able to change the typecast of ‘just a draftsperson’. Building relationships with clients, opening new sectors of work, fostering our companies' culture."
Ashley Flower

Join the conversation

This isn’t the end of the conversation, and it won’t be the last time we share inspiring stories from fellow engineers. If you’d like to be featured in a future article and spread the word about the power of engineering, join the conversation on LinkedIn with the hashtag #IAmAnEngineer.
