Behind the scenes of the new Parramatta Light Rail, how the project reduced its carbon footprint, and why sustainability was front of mind during construction.

The first stage of a new light rail network will soon open in Sydney’s west.

Less than five years after a tram line was reinstalled along George Street in Sydney’s CBD, a new set of tracks has been laid through the middle of Parramatta, connecting the Westmead Health Precinct to Carlingford.

The Parramatta Light Rail, which was a joint venture between the CIMIC Group’s CPB Contractors and Downer Group on behalf of Transport for NSW, features several engineering innovations.

The use of macro synthetic fibre, for instance, within the concrete used during construction reduced the amount of steel reinforcement required by 2426 t, equating to a reduction of carbon dioxide output of more than 4800 t.
