Engineers from a diverse range of disciplines were among those recognised with Queen’s Birthday Honours this year, both for their professional work and for their contributions to the community.

The contribution of Australia’s engineers to the growth and success of society was recognised in the Australia Day Honours list.

This year, two engineers were admitted as Officers of the Order of Australia (AO).

Professor Veena Sahajwalla HonFIEAust CPEng was recognised for her service to science as an engineer and inventor, to sustainable materials research and technology, and waste management.

Renowned in her field, Sahajwalla previously received the Engineers Australia Chemical College Chemical Engineer Achievement Award in 2023 for her pioneering research in high-temperature conversion of waste.

“What I really enjoy seeing is when our collaborators [and] industry partners are as excited … and passionate about doing micro-recycling, because it makes sense for their business,” Sahajwalla told create in 2024.

Professor Bronwyn Fox FIEAust was appointed Deputy Vice Chancellor Research and Enterprise at UNSW last year, and was previously Chief Scientist at CSIRO. She was cited for her distinguished service to public administration, to scientific research and development, to advanced manufacturing and to tertiary education.

Deep commitment

Engineers Australia National President and Chair Dr Raj Aseervatham FIEAust CPEng said being recognised in the Order of Australia demonstrates the deep commitment of these engineers, not only to the profession but to the community they serve.

“Congratulations to all our members recognised,” he said. “We are very proud to see your engineering achievements celebrated at a national level. Your work and dedication serve as an inspiration to all engineers.”

Engineers Australia CEO Romilly Madew AO FTSE HonFIEAust EngExec said receiving an honour is not only a mark of technical prowess but of deep commitment to the creation of solutions that give back to all Australians.

“Recognition in the Honours list reflects an immense amount of hard work and a commitment to service,” Madew said. “Your incredible achievements, from sustainable materials to work on deep-space tracking, set a shining example of the engineering profession.”
