What happens behind the scenes of the world’s best animation?

Great animation doesn’t happen by accident. There’s a lot of physics, maths and engineering involved – and a healthy dose of curiosity about how things work.

If you’ve ever been left awed and inspired by an animated film, then this one’s for you. Guy Griffiths is the Director of R&D for Oscar-winning animation studio Animal Logic, the minds behind the animation for films such as the LEGO Movie, Happy Feet, Walking with Dinosaurs and more. Whether it’s learning about the first principles of physics, what the internal structure of hair looks like or how feathers interact mid-flight, Griffiths said it’s much more complex behind the scenes than you think.
He walks us through the process for some of the projects he and his team have worked on. You won’t look at movies the same way again.
