Events to watch out for: webinars, conferences and more in fourth-quarter 2022

As 2022 enters its final quarter, the array of conferences, webinars and other events Engineers Australia has on its schedule shows no sign of slowing down. There’s something for everyone over the next three months, regardless of discipline or career stage.

It is well worth taking a look at the list of 200 scheduled events — online and in-person — for that period, which you can see in full here, but to make things easier, we have put together a list of highlights of the coming season.

Here are a few of the best on offer:

EA GradHack: National Graduate Hackathon

Date: 21–23 October
Location: Online

EA GradHack invites graduate engineers to solve a real-world sustainability problem in just 48 hours, challenging their theoretical and technical skills and demonstrating their talent to industry. Teams of two to five graduate members of Engineers Australia will have a single weekend to solve their challenge and submit a video submission for judging industry greats. The champion team will receive the first prize of $5000.

Australasian Structural Engineering Conference

Date: 9–10 November
Location: Online and in-person in Melbourne

The theme of this year’s Australasian Structural Engineering Conference is “Engineering resilience,” and the event will bring together industry, government, research and academia to explore innovation and drivers of change. Topics at this biennial symposium include buildings; climate change mitigation; forensics and maintenance of structures; industry; innovation and digitalisation; research and education; sustainability in design; and transport infrastructure.

Climate Smart Engineering Conference

Date: 22–23 November
Location: Online and streamed in-person in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth

The marquee event in Engineers Australia’s fourth-quarter calendar is the Climate Smart Engineering Conference 2022. Building on the success of last year’s inaugural event, this solution-focused, two half-day event will highlight how the engineering profession can better manage the complex challenges of achieving net zero emissions. Bringing in the expertise of keynote speakers including Dr Saul Griffith, Kevin Hennessy, Peter Bryant and Sophia Hamblin Wang, the conference will drive the climate conversation as engineers take on the opportunity to manage the complex challenges on the way to achieving net-zero emissions as soon as practical.

Hydrology and Water Resources Symposium

Date: 30 November – 2 December
Location: Brisbane

The 40th Hydrology and Water Resources Symposium will convene under the theme “The past, the present, the future.” Looking back at the work and impact of industry predecessors and exploring current water-related issues and trends, speakers and delegates will examine the innovation and technologies shaping the future of water engineering.

International Conference on Coastal Engineering

Date: 4–9 December
Location: Sydney

Returning after a four-year hiatus, the 2022 International Conference on Coastal Engineering is the premier coastal engineering conference. Promoting academic and technical exchange on coastal-related studies, the event will cover a broad range of topics, including coastal waves, nearshore currents, coastal structures, sediment transport, coastal morphology, beach nourishment, natural hazards and coastal management.
