Meet Engineers Australia’s new CEO Romilly Madew AO FTSE HonFIEAust

Romilly Madew AO HonFIEAust

Romilly Madew AO HonFIEAust has been announced as the new CEO of Engineers Australia, following the retirement of Dr Bronwyn Evans in May.

Taking on the role of Chief Executive Officer at Engineers Australia is no small feat, but for Romilly Madew AO HonFIEAust working with a member-based organisation dedicated to shaping a sustainable world is something she is looking forward to.

“Over the last two decades I have worked closely with Engineers Australia and have always recognised the engineering profession as the nation’s problem-solvers,” said Madew.

“Engineers Australia’s vision and focus align with the values I’ve pursued throughout my career: to listen to a wide range of voices, to engage with members to gain consensus, to build strong teams and partnerships, and to achieve on-the-ground real-world impact.”

In early 2019 Madew was appointed CEO of Infrastructure Australia and was responsible for overseeing Infrastructure Australia’s critical role in helping governments prioritise projects and reforms that best serve our communities.

Engineers Australia National President Dr Nick Fleming FIEAust CPEng said Madew was chosen after an extensive executive search that spanned the engineering sector and industry.

“Romilly comes to us as a globally recognised CEO and advocate for change in the property and construction sector.  Her visionary leadership style will enhance and build on our strong legacy of advancing society through great engineering, sound strategy and investment,” Fleming said.

Building a notable career

Before joining Infrastructure Australia, Madew was CEO of Green Building Council of Australia for 13 years. In 2019, Madew was awarded an Order of Australia in recognition of her contribution to Australia’s sustainable building movement. Alongside sustainability, Madew is also broadly recognised for her vocal advocacy on important topics including diversity, Indigenous engagement, flexibility in the workplace and women in sport.

Madew currently sits on a range of boards and taskgroups, including recently on the Expert Advisory Panel for the CSIRO Report on Climate and Disaster Resilience and a Commissioner for the Northern Territory Economic Reconstruction Commission.

Engineers Australia COO Michael Luddeni is currently acting CEO until Madew commences her role on August 1.
