National Science Week is underway, with events all over the country, from art galleries to rocketry exhibitions, and from beach walks to chats about dinosaurs in a pop-up bar.
Of course, engineers and engineering have been well represented at events across the nation, and Engineers Australia is there too.
There are still events happening this week that you can take part in, if you’re quick.
Bring a problem to a mentor

Overview
The Women in Engineering Sydney Division is collaborating with Western Sydney University to provide younger engineers with an opportunity to “bring a problem to a mentor”.
Participants can come to the event with a challenge that they would like to talk through, or they can come to hear about others’ issues, or just to experience what a mentoring session is like. Four industry professionals will work through the problem and act as the mentor for the evening.
This event will help participants to build a foundation of sustained networks to provide mentoring opportunities as well as to grow connections in Western Sydney.
Example topics could be:
- I need to have a difficult conversation with someone in the workplace and I don’t know how.
- I want to ask for feedback or guidance but I don’t know how.
- What can I do to prepare myself to enter the workplace after having just finished studying?
- What can I do to stand out when I go for a job/placement interview?
- How do I work out what career path to take and what it is I really enjoy doing?
Eaglehawk Landfill site tour and circular Greater Bendigo and networking dinner

Overview
This event will include a site tour of the Eaglehawk Landfill including the recently completed rehabilitation works.
An overview of the following will be provided as part of the tour:
- Operations of the landfill and how it currently works including the complexities, the challenges and the achievements over the last five years with an entirely new management team at the helm.
- Recently completed rehabilitation works including learnings along the way, the complexities of the work and what is yet to come.
- Introduction to the Circular Greater Bendigo Project and life after landfill for the Bendigo Region.
Following the site tour, you can make your own way to a networking dinner at a hotel nearby.
EngConnect Your Career in Environmental Engineering

EngConnect your Career is a series of events from Engineers Australia, aimed at students, graduates and industry professionals. The session will be useful for anyone looking to transition their career, or if you’re keen to hear from engineers about where their engineering studies have taken them. This session will feature speakers from environmental engineering disciplines and showcase the diversity of career opportunities.
After a welcome to Engineers Australia, a number of engineers will share their career stories with you, followed by networking with speakers, and engineers from a number of our technical groups.

Thought Leaders Series: The value of nature in the race to net zero

What if we achieve Net Zero, but lose the nature and wildlife that make our places unique?
Biodiversity is the bond between all organisms on earth. Every animal, plant and mineral plays a role that connects us all together. But we are destroying habitats faster than we are restoring them and using 25% more natural resources than nature can sustain.
Nature positive and net zero are inherently interlinked. The planet is under immense strain. With greater biodiversity and natural resources, atmospheric carbon can be reduced, and the planet cooled. However, rising temperatures and human activity are reducing biodiversity.
We must all act today to save, protect and improve biodiversity. New policies and laws are being put in place to guide us, but communities need to come together to create a sustainable world that benefits nature and humanity.
Many experts have been concerned over the last two years that a focus on achieving the very technical aspects of Net Zero has had dire consequences for nature and biodiversity.
