Atlassian Central is a deeply ambitious project.

Towering above Central Station, the building features an innovative diagrid structure which sees the building resemble something out of a far-future depiction of planet Earth.

Although yet to be completed, the structure has already passed the milestone of becoming the world’s tallest hybrid timber commercial structure.

“What is unusual on this project is [the way the] load goes down to the ground,” Jahaan Rowdah, Construction Manager at Built, told create. “At level seven, it transfers through diagonal columns into two locations, the concrete core and two mega columns to the north of the building.

“The load moving through one of these inclined columns into the core exceeds 50 MN, which is an extreme amount of force.”

Dexus’s Peter Morley, Project Director of the Atlassian Central development, described the “clear vision” of Dexus and Atlassian for the building.

“We wanted to reimagine the office of the future, to move away from the traditional approach that our industry has pursued for the last hundred years, and create a building which responded to the changing needs and expectations of society,” he said.

Rowdah attributed the project’s success during construction to having multiple teams working in unison.

“This complex and remarkable project would never have been possible without the hard work of the Built-Obayashi, Dexus and Atlassian teams. Thank you to all the subcontractors, consultants and everyone else who’s played a part in getting us to where we are now on the project.”
