Infographic: How this construction company mitigated floods in a Tasmanian town

The Latrobe Flood Mitigation Project has transformed the management of floodwater and flow of wastewater in a vulnerable regional township.

Only a few thousand people live in the town of Latrobe, southeast of Devonport in Tasmania. But the population has experienced a number of severe flood events, most notably in 2016, that laid bare the need to bolster the town’s waterway infrastructure.

BridgePro Engineering, a local contractor better known for bridge construction projects, was engaged to undertake an ambitious flood mitigation project. It was a simple enough idea, but complex to execute – and essential for community safety.

The $14 million project is now a finalist in the Engineers Australia Excellence Awards, in the Project of the Year category.

    1. Culvert or sewage are effective to drain away flooded water.
    Yes, shoring to ensure no collapse during construction. use sheet piles, strut, to stabilise soil on both sides of trench. inspect weekly and certify safe for workman in the trench. My U classmate was killed in a trench collapse in 1980 era in power company staff
    2. 1.5 m from nearby building is very near. May affect bulidng submerge, settlement. near sensor to detect. Stop work if settlement alarm, affect stabiity of building nearby
    3. calculate the rainfall amount from DSD hk manual. desigh enough capacity to drain flood
    4. construct enough drain channel, manholes, cleanse rubbish
    5. use multi submersible pumps operate more pump at higher flood level level if one pump not effective. Use level detectors

    Looks really good. Hope they don’t get a 1in1000 anytime soon! 🙂

    Did you use any CMIP6 data to look at rainfall inentisty for 2100 to 2200?
