“[It] helps you see yourself as an engineer”: Rebecca Viney on her role as a volunteer student ambassador

The time, resources and expertise offered to engineering by Engineers Australia’s many volunteers is matched only by the powerful satisfaction they earn from their roles. From student ambassadors to College Chairs, our volunteers demonstrate passion aplenty as they alter the engineering landscape forever.

For this year’s National Volunteer Week, thirteen of Engineers Australia’s dedicated volunteers spoke to create about the value of using their experience and expertise to give back to the engineering community.

While pleasing to see volunteers generically and specifically acknowledged, there is not a mention of Regional Groups throughout this article which is sad as their volunteers work tirelessly to provide CPD opportunities to the profession, expose the attributes of engineering to their local communities and as career choice to local schools.
I have to say, in my nine years of participating in the Committee of our Southern Highlands and Tablelands Regional Group (Sydney Division) including 3 years as Chair, we are, despite sterling efforts from Committee, starting to lose our relevance.
