Florence Violet McKenzie was the first Australian woman to gain a diploma in electrical engineering.

To celebrate International Women’s Day, create maps the careers of three trailblazing engineers who forged a path in the profession.

Australia is home to many influential female engineers, from recycling revolutionary Veena Sahajwalla HonFIEAust CPEng to biomedical innovator Professor Hala Zreiqat and Engineers Australia’s own Dr Bronwyn Evans AM HonFIEAust CPEng and Jane MacMaster FIEAust CPEng.

But this wasn’t always the case. It took the courage and conviction of engineers like those below to help make progress possible.

While there is still much work to be done to increase the number of women in the profession, looking back at those who were the first in their field or discipline shows how far we’ve come.

I’ve heard of Florence Violet McKenzie before. For a long time I’ve thought there should be a statue of her. It could be located at the site of her shop in Sydney or the Australian War Memorial. I would make a donation if a fund was started.

You forgot about Ruby Payne Scott
Ruby Payne-Scott was an Australian pioneer in radio physics and radio astronomy, and is believed to have been the first female radio astronomer.
A truely brilliant trailblazer . As well as striving for woman’s rights
